Detailed 3-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Kigali, City Tour & Transfer to Volcanoes National Park

Your 3-day Rwanda gorilla and golden monkey safari begins in Kigali, where you will meet your private driver-guide and start your introduction to Rwanda.

Depending on your arrival time and interests, begin with a guided Kigali city tour. Kigali is one of Africa’s cleanest and most organized capital cities, combining modern urban development with a rich cultural heritage.

A visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial provides an important opportunity to learn about Rwanda’s history and the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. Your guide can also take you to local markets, artisan shops and other points of interest around the city.

After the city tour, depart Kigali and travel north towards Volcanoes National Park.

The journey takes you through some of Rwanda’s most beautiful countryside. The landscape changes from Kigali’s urban surroundings to rolling green hills, terraced farmland, villages and agricultural communities. As you approach Musanze, the impressive volcanic peaks of the Virunga Mountains begin to dominate the horizon.

There may be opportunities to stop along the way for photographs and short visits to scenic viewpoints.

Continue to your accommodation near Volcanoes National Park, where you can relax, enjoy dinner and prepare for the following day’s unforgettable gorilla trekking adventure.

Day 2: Mountain Gorilla Trekking & Iby’iwacu Cultural Experience

Today is the highlight of your Rwanda adventure: mountain gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park.

After an early breakfast, drive to the park headquarters in Kinigi for registration and a briefing from the Rwanda park authorities and experienced trackers.

Visitors are allocated to habituated gorilla families according to the current trekking arrangements. Once your group has been briefed, you begin your trek into the forest.

Mountain Gorilla Trekking

The trek takes you into the spectacular foothills of the Virunga Mountains. Depending on the location of your assigned gorilla family, the hike may pass through farmland, bamboo forests and dense montane vegetation.

Gorilla trekking is a genuine wilderness experience, and the duration can vary considerably depending on the location and movement of the gorilla family.

Experienced trackers lead the way, following signs of the gorillas and communicating with the trekking team to determine their current location.

Then comes the moment you have been waiting for.

You arrive in the presence of a habituated mountain gorilla family.

Spend up to one unforgettable hour observing the gorillas, watching their natural behaviour as they feed, rest, groom one another and interact with other members of the family. You may see powerful silverbacks, mothers caring for infants and playful young gorillas moving through the vegetation.

The encounter is intimate, extraordinary and one of the world’s most memorable wildlife experiences.

After completing the trek, return to the park headquarters and meet your driver-guide before continuing with your afternoon cultural experience.

Iby’iwacu Cultural Village

In the afternoon, visit the Iby’iwacu Cultural Village, where you can discover traditional Rwandan culture and learn more about the communities living around Volcanoes National Park.

The experience offers an opportunity to meet local people and former poachers who have transitioned into conservation and tourism-related activities.

Depending on the day’s programme, you may experience:

  • Traditional Rwandan drumming
  • Cultural dances and performances
  • Traditional healing demonstrations
  • Banana-beer brewing demonstrations
  • Traditional Rwandan cuisine and customs
  • A recreated traditional king’s palace
  • Local stories and community traditions

The visit provides a meaningful connection between tourism, conservation and the communities surrounding the national park.

After the cultural experience, return to your lodge for dinner and a well-earned rest.

Day 3: Golden Monkey Tracking & Return to Kigali

Wake up early for the final wildlife experience of your Rwanda safari: golden monkey tracking.

After breakfast, drive to the park headquarters for registration and briefing before entering the bamboo forests of Volcanoes National Park.

Golden Monkey Tracking

Golden monkeys are among Rwanda’s most fascinating primates. With their distinctive golden-orange coats and lively personalities, they are very different from the more powerful and reserved mountain gorillas.

The trek takes you through bamboo forest as you search for energetic troops moving through the vegetation.

Golden monkeys are highly active and can often be seen jumping between branches, feeding, grooming and interacting with one another. Their playful behaviour makes golden monkey tracking an excellent complement to the quieter and more intimate gorilla trekking experience.

The trek generally lasts around 1–3 hours, including the tracking experience and time spent observing and photographing the monkeys, although the duration can vary depending on their location and movement.

After completing your golden monkey trek, return to the park headquarters and meet your driver-guide.

You will then check out of your accommodation and begin the drive back to Kigali.

Depending on your departure schedule, you may stop at a local market, artisan shop or scenic viewpoint along the way. There may also be time for souvenir shopping before your driver transfers you to Kigali International Airport or your hotel in Kigali.

This brings to an end your three-day journey through Rwanda’s history, culture, mountains and extraordinary wildlife.

Best Time for This Rwanda Gorilla Safari

Gorilla and golden monkey trekking in Volcanoes National Park can be enjoyed throughout the year. However, the relatively drier periods are often preferred because forest trails can be easier to navigate.

The wetter months can also offer excellent wildlife experiences, with lush vegetation and beautiful scenery, although trekking conditions may be more challenging.

Because gorilla trekking permits are limited, advance booking is strongly recommended, particularly during Rwanda’s busiest travel periods.

What to Bring for Gorilla & Golden Monkey Trekking

For the best experience, travellers should bring:

  • Lightweight, comfortable trekking clothing
  • Waterproof hiking boots
  • Waterproof jacket or poncho
  • Long trousers and long-sleeved shirts
  • Gardening or trekking gloves
  • Hat and sunglasses
  • Insect repellent
  • Sunscreen
  • Small backpack
  • Camera with spare batteries
  • Reusable water bottle
  • Personal medication

The forest can be wet and muddy, so suitable footwear and waterproof clothing are particularly important.
